hey all....am pretty new to this website,im looking to purchase a specialist buggy called an ormesa 'bug' for my 3 yr old son,he already has a moulded buggy but his seizures are getting a bit worse now so i need a buggy i can have rear facing mostly....any ideas?

Also have you spoken with your OT to see if they can assist with this?

Hi Jamie (also 3) had his buggy assessment done yesterday and has been issued the Ormesa bug as a result. He was referred to Wheelchair services by his physio and it was followed up by input from his OT. He was referred in Dec so it has been quite a long waiting list. The buggy should be ready in 6-8 wks but they are going to modify it for my son as he is quite small (and has short thighs apparently!!)
I didn't even know you had to ask for a referral until a friend told me- I had assumed (wrongly) that if my son was entitled he would automatically have been referred. Maybe that is the case for some? but I have found out since that most people have had to be quite upfront and ask.
The good thing about getting one issued is that the maintenance etc is all taken care of and you know the buggy is adjusted perfectly to your sons requirements and measurements instead of someone elses.
It is a fab buggy though-my son looked so comfy in it that I hated putting him back into his regular pushchair. I'd love to hear how other people get on with it on a day to day basis though as there maybe down sides??

My wee man is 3 also. He has had the bug for 2 years and has just outgrown it. Our wheelchair services offered us the next size up, but to be honest, I wanted something different. Don't get me wrong, we loved the Bug, we just needed a bit more. The suspension was a bit hard on it and it is heavy. We opted for the Thomas Hilfen Jazz Easy S. It's half the weight of the bug, has great, soft suspension and generally looks much nicer. It has the option to face forward or rear too. Zak has a LOT of seizures (we are talking 30 + a day) abd bumps and knocks are one of his triggers, so a soft suspention is essential.
Your wheelchair services should be supplying a suitable chair, but if you are serious about buying one independently, you can get them from Rainbow mobility. They are great, very helpfull, even to the point that they let us pay in installments.

I also recommend the 3 wheel base. It's so much easier to use, and in my opinion better looking. Its not crash tested with 3 wheels though.

hi all my son has had the ormessa bug for approx 2 years he has quad cp and was refered to wheelchair services by physiotherapy. the bug can face forwards or backwards, not interchangable once set in position without allen key supplied, not a problem cause son likes to always face forward to see whats going on! the base is a solid chassis and is crash tested so can be used on council transport to school. the base folds down onto itself a bit like an ironing board? and the main seating stays in one piece, fully supportive and easy to use and move about. the only downside i found was transporting it in the car only having a small clio the base was heavy to lift into the boot and the seat took up half of the back seat of the clio with the carseat taking up the rest, i could only carry me and my son no room for any other passengers! oh and not supplied with accessories cosytoes and raincover these are expensive 300.00 i applied to the Family Fund for these. hope this info is some use
