I have recently taking my 9 year old son with ASD out of his mainstream school due to personal reasons (long story).
I now need to find him a new school, i have been looking at both mainstream schools and special schools and i personally feel that he would be better off in a special school.
However i have been told that we need a statement to get into special school, and we do not have one, although i am going to try and get one.
The Inclusion officer & Parent partnership and also school are saying he would have to stay in mainsteam and that he does not need a statement as the school and handling my son fine, but this couldnt be further from the truth (that is why i have removed him from the school)
Where do i go from here?
Can anyone help me with advice on getting a statement and what are your thoughts and personal experiences? Mainstream or Special school

Have you ever requested a statement yourself?
As this can be done through the local authority by sending a letter to them.
Let me know what local education authority you come under and ill give you the details on who to write to Smile

So basically what you now should do is the following:

1) Send a letter

Dear Sir or Madam,

(child’s name) (date of birth)

Request for formal assessment

I am writing as the parent of the above child to request an assessment of his special educational needs under the 1996 Education Act.

(child’s name) attends ..................... school.

I believe that (child’s name)'s special educational needs are as follows:

My reasons for believing that the school cannot on their own make the provision required to meet my child’s needs are:

I understand that you are required by law to reply to this request within six weeks and that if you refuse I will be able to appeal to the Special Educational Needs Tribunal.

Yours sincerely,

Send this to: (Dependent on your local office)

have you spoken to the head teacher of the special needs school? unless things have changed they did matt's assessment after he had started special school as the head said he could come while they did the assessment and the school by you might be the same if you explain the situation

There comes a point in your life when you realize:Who matters,Who never did,Who won't anymore...And who always will..
So, don't worry about people from your past, there's a reason why they didn't make it to your future.
