ipad for special needs?

I've just been nosying around the itunes app store after been told about the various apps available for the ipad and ipod for those with special needs. Matthew is now accurate with gross motor movements but his physio wants to work towards finer movements, i.e using one finger. I have an ipod touch which I'm happy for him to use, but I think its a bit small for him. Does anyone have an ipad for this purpose and are they worth it? Are the apps any good? I've seen quite a few very basic touch, or touch and drag / cause and effect type games which I can see him enjoying. I've seen the ones on the disability aids site, I think the popping bubbles game was what made me think of it! But I like some of the ones I can get on the itunes store as there is more choice. I know its a heck of a lot of money for this purpose, but I can see how much it could help him if he could do it. Would I be better getting a second hand one? Or is it possible to get a grant towards one? Raising the awareness of encephalitis, one baby step at a time.....

Hi i think this is the way forward for communiction, i seen Children using these apps, who you wouldnt think would be able to use them, do so really well. I let my girl look at these apps on a i pod touch ,but she cannot be left alone with one as everything goes in her mouth so i have to hold it, but she likes touching it, i am hoping she we learn to use it one day. nat

We have an ipad for my daughter. She has very poor fine motor skills, and she adores it. She uses it in her own way, ie: with her knuckles as she can't use her finger tips or pincer grip. But she gets by. There are lots of games I can think of that you could enourage use of index finger, and many are free. She uses her ipad daily, and it's been worth every penny. Sometimes it's just to watch iplayer, go on the net or chat to friends on Facetime. But she really gets alot out of it and removes all the frustrations she has with using a mouse/keyboard.
She is 8 though, so I'm imagining she might be alot older. Fran x |

It protects it from bumbs but also gives a little one a chance to play without causing damage!! Things can be hard on occasions but well worth it!
