We have all had concerns ranging from education, acess to services, respite and other issues directly related to their childrens needs. Parents of disabled children bring families together for friendship, to share information and to support one another.

The forum was created by parents who have children with special needs and is run by parents so we are all in this together. With us you will realise you are not alone

Parents of disabled children launched in October 2009 and we are growing day by day and are fastly becoming a major support resource for all

Housing advice needed.

Hi,

We have a 7yr old child with severe disabilities (medical & physical). Currently we live in our own house. we've been assesed for a dfg but there's not enough space to build a separate room and bathroom for our daughter. What can we do? we have two younger children and a small two bed terraced house. we can't afford to move to a bigger house - we're struggling to keep this one! The OT says they can't do anything else - asked to a dfg to help with conservatory to increase space but that was denied. We have a stairlift to help and the OT wants to put in hoists - but there's such little space! We're so frustrated. our daughter badly needs her own space - so do the other Children!

Any advice please?

thanks - much appreciated.

If your finding it hard to afford the home your in, maybe you should apply for a house from the council, i know that this is a step down but at least you'll have the room that you need, and maybe the extra money from your house sale would be beneficial to you as well.

Council housing is an option and with the medical needs side of things then there are options to explore.

How about converting the loft?

We fight to protect our Children, and we continue to fight, challenge and Win for our children's sakes no matter what their age to give them a better life. We find an inner strength to do what we need to do and remember you are never alone!!!

From my experience with housing problems the only thing I can suggest is that you apply for council housing. With the severity of your childs problems you will get far more help and should find a suitable house within a few months depending on availability.
Once you have a bigger house with more space then it can be suitably adapted. I also have 3 children in a 2 bedroom house so I know how you feel.
Although it would be annoying for you to have to sell your house it would make things a lot easier in the long term although it may not feel that way at the time. As someone said earlier you will also have money from the sale of your house so you wont have mortage worries to deal with on top of everything else.
Look into it and you will see its not going to be that difficult.
If anything is going to improve your quality of life then its definately worth looking into. Smile
