With Euan the infections were there for the first year but since then we have been quite lucky with it.
Have to agree with the Silver dressings and how well they help.
Hope the anti biotics work but they should look at using the silver dressings to in order to get it looking good afterwards.
Keep us updated Smile

i would ask for kendall AMD antimicrobial dressings, we lost jacobs first gastrostomy to infection it had to be cored out and stiched up and a new one placed in a different place, he seemingly has problems with chronic staph infections and got his first within a week of it being placed, we decided to go down the dressing route as antibiotics play havoc with his already fragile digestive system and these have been a life saver, theyre mega expensive im lucky that my gp will prescibe almost anything without seeing jacob given his history but a friend of mine who is using them on her daughters gastrostomy is only allowed one every 3 days (which in all honesty is all i use anyway so always have hundreds spare). i also make sure i get gauze and saline and gloves on prescription too and everything i do to jacobs site is a sterile proceedure so id recommend the same for you. if you want to give the dressings a try im happy to send you a box to see if they work before you get them on script, i cover them with a waterproof iv dressing over the top too so can also send some of them. i'll admit to totally taking advantage of the NHS but we cannot risk losing this site two like we did with the last one and his 4 central lines never lasted more than a couple weeks each so im super super careful and its paying off.

we also silver nitrate jacobs granulation i do it at home but i think its generally done by a nurse, over granualation is a prefect breeding ground for bacteria and can also cause stoma leakage which will also promote infection so its really important to keep on top of it if charlie has any, even though i know its like fighting a losing battle, as soon as you get on top of it more seems to grow in its place.
let me know about the dressings.

also, just to add to all the fab advice above Blush if you wanted something quick im pretty sure boots/lloyds sell silver dressings! i know for sure ive seen the plasters and im pretty sure ive seen the dressings too....just a thought if you couldnt get the nurse out and maybe wanted to try. theyre not the same as the ones prescribed, i find they dont absorb as much as say the biatain foam dressings but they are usefull still Smile

logan_jacobs_mummy, i also get everything prescribed, steriwipes to wipe the sides, steripods to clean, gauze, gloves, everything....they have to im sure because its always ment to be sterile as its an open wound!

xx

lol lucy im glad im not the only one, i also think it should be sterile, its not the case in hospital so noone there touches his site but me im a tad pedantic about it but the price of a few sterets and some gauze in comparison to another lot of surgery and admission is incomparable In my opinion .
