Hi,
Thanks for joining and i hope you get into the site and enjoy ![]() Out of curiousity how long have you been trying to get the diagnosis of aspergers? As i hear so many stories of fighting the system for years and was wondering if you had to go through this too? ![]() Our Irish members can also use our new website for Ireland which is |

Its taken about a year. I was initially in denial about Aspergers as when my son was 4 I broached the possibility to his then reception class teacher who dismissed me as stupid and my son as naughty. Finally last year after much research I went to my GP with my concerns (and a list!) about balance and coordination and suspected Dyspraxia. He was excellent and started the ball rolling. I also had some excellent advice from Lorrine Marer who I emailed after seeing her on tv speaking on a programme about children with difficulties. The last year of tests, doctors and specialists has been hard...very hard and emotional but since his diagnosis 2 weeks ago I feel such relief. Im annoyed at myself for listening to that teacher way back but now that we are finally here it feels great. x

Dont be annoyed about listening to the teacher because even if you hadnt and had gone to the doctors in many cases they ask the school for a report for the behaviour of the child etc.
This is one of the biggest problems with the system at the moment i believe is that doctors are expecting teachers to be some sort of specialist in conditions. I think the diagnosis should come away from the school teacher completly and if they want to use the school atomsphere as evidence they should send in one of there own team to conduct the assesments at school all of the time not sometimes but ALWAYS. Saying that though the assesment centres have a teacher employed by the local council working for them so i actually would go as far as saying i think the whole process is flawed as it relys on Hoping the teachers are good enough at there job. ![]() Our Irish members can also use our new website for Ireland which is |
