Announcement

Families who have children and young people with special needs very often deal with similar life styles. We have all had concerns ranging from education, acess to services, respite and other issues directly related to their childrens needs. Parents of disabled children bring families together for friendship, to share information and to support one another.

The forum was created by parents who have children with special needs and is run by parents so we are all in this together. With us you will realise you are not alone

Parents of disabled children launched in October 2009 and we are growing day by day and are fastly becoming a major support resource for all

respite how long to arrange
cheapsensorytoys
Hi, does anyone know how long it takes to arrange respite care?, about six weeks ago we agreed to use this service even tho' at first we turned it down mainly because of the things you see on the tv I would feel so guilty if anything happened to him and I'd put him in that situation, but after speaking to people all who reasured us that this could'nt happen now we decided to accept this help mainly for our other 3 children to give them a break aswell as us we hav'nt heard anything for 6 wks, the social worker was suppposed to come back to see us and sort things out but hasn't yet so just wondered how long it takes.

I have 4 lovely children Caleb and Bay who have fragile x
Trinity and Lucas who don't Heart

Depending on the processes in place the time factor can vary considerably, there will be funding panels , referral processes assessments etc etc keep up the pressure until you have it in place.Social Workers have big case loads and tend to prioritise families. Keep asking for an update Good Luck

We fight to protect our Children, and we continue to fight, challenge and Win for our children's sakes no matter what their age to give them a better life. We find an inner strength to do what we need to do and remember you are never alone!!!

I think it depends what kind of respite care you have been referred for. We were referred to Crossroads for respite by our social worker about 6 weeks ago. Crossroads have been in touch to say that there are 18 families in the queue before us. We were referred for Direct Payments at the same time and have someone coming to start the process this week but we know that's going to take a while as we have to advertise for someone, do the interviews, etc. It's just nice to know the respite is coming! I don't think any of it is quick unless soneone is totally incapable of looking after their child. Good luck with it!
