Announcement

Families who have children and young people with special needs very often deal with similar life styles. We have all had concerns ranging from education, acess to services, respite and other issues directly related to their childrens needs. Parents of disabled children bring families together for friendship, to share information and to support one another.

The forum was created by parents who have children with special needs and is run by parents so we are all in this together. With us you will realise you are not alone

Parents of disabled children launched in October 2009 and we are growing day by day and are fastly becoming a major support resource for all

Holiday care & respite
cheapsensorytoys
Sorry I don't know where to put this - Daniel do we need a separate part for this - I seem to remember you were getting a list of respite in each area somewhere but now I can't find it.

This is one of my major beefs in my area. What kind of holiday cover do you get in your areas?

Sorry I've not been on here much I've been trying to fight lots of things, lots of meetings, people involved etc (sound familiar lol?!).

One of which is holiday care. The council are renewing the contract for the area for holiday care, after school, respite, befriending etc and its going out to tender (over Christmas - nice timing!). I've got involved as this is the first time they are letting parents give their views & we need to look over the tenders ready for a meeting 7th Jan to help decide who wins the contracts (not got the tenders yet though - there will probably be about 30, childcare a problem etc etc!).

Theres not anything we can do about the actual contract (its asking for less care than last year even & when I challenged it they said "oh thats cos so and so won it and they decided to do some extra because they found some money from somewhere else!").

I'm wondering if anyone else can tell me what holiday provision they have for which age groups and how many days etc - maybe we could compare?

The respite care article was under healthcare but to make it a little easier i have renamed the Healthcare section to:

Healthcare and care needs
Discuss your childs disability and discuss any concerns you have about your childs disability and health care and care needs. From Nhs Care to respite care and all other types of care this forum is the place.

So respite care now has a home :cmas_emoticon030:

If any other members feel that we are missing out on forum sections or would like some amendments please let me know and ill do what i can.

There is a request thread for any ideas you may have.

hi bessie, i have put this in the other post but i copying it in here in case you miss it

i went to the cab who phoned the nas who gave me this link its a bit hard to work round but if you put in respite in the search and click on services before you put in your postcode it comes up with a lot of places, some are schools but they do have respite too, they are mostly aimed at autism but i think its more that they will accept autistic Children rather than for autism only.

also check out outreach for the holiday part they have had money from aiming high for short trips and days out (son going to an activity holiday for 3 days at easter with them)

There comes a point in your life when you realize:Who matters,Who never did,Who won't anymore...And who always will..
So, don't worry about people from your past, there's a reason why they didn't make it to your future.

we have the phew in motherwell for a respite centre, but to get that you have to go through Social services and we have tried and they said there full but its all down to money funding. as it costs for them to stay a weekend.

Just bringing this up again as we've a meeting with the social services next week again to try & get some help. The problem is that there is not enough in our area. For our age group the summer holiday provision in our council is likely to be 4 days playscheme (although last holiday when they offered 2 days we were initially only offered 1/2 a day because there were a lot of children needing to get booked in so it had to be spread around). I think 1/2 a day in a strange place (it always seems to be a different place each time) did more harm than good. What do you all get playscheme wise? Also we get no other respite. When I was looking into direct payments I'm sure I read that if you are assessed as needing these services, you are entitled to them and the council not having suitable services is not an excuse and you can ask for direct payments instead. I'd like to get an idea of how much holiday care other councils provide?
