Parents of disabled children bring families together for friendship, to share information and to support one another.

The forum was created by parents who have children with special needs and is run by parents so we are all in this together. With us you will realise you are not alone

Parents of disabled children launched in October 2009 and we are growing day by day and are fastly becoming a major support resource for all

dcd and my son
cheapsensorytoys
Hello my son has dcd and complex needs.
I have just got off the phone to his nan who he has been with and she said he has been peddling his bike which is a big achevement for him as he couldnt do that before.
He has been going to a special school over the summer holidays but i dont know if they have taught him this skill.
He cannot steer and peddle at the same time she said.
I was wondering if it is normal for a child with dcd to do this.
It is a trike which is close to the ground because he cant balance on a high rise bike which is sutable for his age.
I dont know if i should buy him a bike which is suitable for his requirements.

by dcd do you mean developmental co-ordination delay?
My daugher who is 13 next week has that and yes they do learn new skills as they grow as its a delay in their development not that they will not make progress. She is still very clumbsy but she and we have learnt ways round things, she uses a sloa[ing board at school which has help a lot with writting, velcro instaed of laces and buttons, ect. Emily aslo has other difficulties but she is detirmined not to be held back, but 1 thing that bothers her is the fact she cannot manage scates yet. Emily finds them very painful on her hips and im amazed she hasen broke any bones yet. She was 9 by the time she could ride a bike and even now she falls off it a lot but she just gets back on. The 1 thing that hurts me is the times her teachers asked where emily got her bruises and unfortunatly emily has a very poor memory and falling is an everyday event so she cannot remember every bruise. that bothers me that they feel they need to ask me when they know how poor her balance is. Emily also has a severve language delay and social communication disorder, i was told they go together.
