It feels so odd! I've been on a career break from my full time job since my maternity leave finished in 2008. I was due to go back to work in June 2011 and I loved working for the organisation I'd been at for 23 years. However, since having Jack I was dreading having to return to full time working (he wouldn't be at school even). I kept saying to Dave that I wished I could be made redundant (to take away all the decision making of returning to work really - purely selfish I know) - well, looks like my wish has been granted!! But I don't feel elated or anything, just a bit numb - the guarantee of a full time job was kind of our financial back up plan, now I feel like someone is rolling up my safety net!! |

Like a lot of organisations they have to make cut backs and they need to make permanent cost savings of £15m by 2014. Staff within the police are the biggest cost - so I guess that's the easiest way to save some money - get rid of as many as possible! They are offering a very good enhanced redundancy scheme though until 31 August this year. If they get enough people apply for it they won't have to go down the route of making compulsory redundancies. From what I've heard whilst I've been away from work, morale is at an all time low so I think a lot of people will take up the offer. Though of course, there will be those that absolutely have to work because they are the sole bread winners within their family. I guess in that respect, we feel lucky that Dave has a good full time job. I've contacted the HR Dept and asked them to work out my 'benefits' so I can make an informed decision though after discussing it last night my best option is to take it rather than go back under the black cloud of possible compulsory redundancy. I think that because I've been away from the place so long, we've gotten used to not having my salary come in and have made so many cut backs that we know we can manage - just. |
