hi my son who is 3 years and 3 months when to see his peaditrican yesterday, iv had endless nites sleep worrying about this appointment and preparing for it because the last time i saw the pead was in jan and he was positive my son had a s & l disorder like his 2 older brothers but yesterday after reading the several reports i took with me from other professionals all saying autism, what i said and what they observed of harvey he said my son fits the critera for autism n that after speaking with the lady from interaction n comunications team we will be there and ready for a formal diagnosis! he said he couldnt believe how much and quickly my son had regressed and said he was like a different child!! we have a caf/multidisaplinary meeting in september and the pead says he is going to give harvey is formal diagnosis there infront of all the professional who attend! he also gave me the leaflet for the early birds course and told me to enrol on is straight away!! i dont know if i should but im taking this as a diagnosis that just needs putting on paper!! how ever my husband is waiting for the formal dx before saying our son is autistic although he strongly believes he is!! the pead also gave my husband a polite leacture telling him not to compare our son with the children he wrks with ( he works in a residential unit for children with severe autism ) because they all different and all need different support and help. yesterday was such a relief as i was convinced the pead was going to say s & l disorder see u in 6 months again but having 2 children with s & l disorder (my 5 year old being severe) i knew this was something else!! just wanted to add my 5 year old is at a special school and it really is the best thing we have ever done for him, he is really doing well and came ome the other day and wrote and spelt his whole name all by himself!! such a pround moment!! hope evry one is well xx |

Awww, how lovely that he wrote his name!!
![]() Yes, it does sound like a diagnosis to me, it just sounds like you've been given the diagnosis and it's just a case of the paed telling everyone else involved now. I hope you're ok, it's never nice to get a diagnosis. It's nice in a way as I find having a name for it does help (my daughter has global developmental delay) but it makes it all the more official and real when you get a diagnosis and it did knock me for six. Always offers reassurance when a medical expert concurs with our thoughts!
Euan's doctor has also started to concur with our concerns now to the point where he also wants his development problems and behaviour issues included on his statement which was for medical needs as well ![]() We are now at the point where the doctor has made the step up in gear and is looking to make a diagnosis of sorts in regards to his other issues outside of his medical ones. Its funny because as a parent you slope along knowing something is not right and tell them and they make you doubt yourself and then all of a sudden they click me may be right ![]() Its funny because if i had a pound for every time i heard but how would a diagnosis change things well it would put our minds at rest and ensure he is getting the correct help and education ![]() Our Irish members can also use our new website for Ireland which is |

sorry for hijacking your thread but didnt see the point in making a new one when yours says it all.We had our mid point review the other day with our pead and since november we have had blood tests hearing and explored nearly everthing trying to get a diagnosis.Ive been told over and over we may never get one most people dont .I went to the review not expecting much although my son has started to do a bit more than he could 9 months ago which is great
hes now walking although he cant walk outside and he falls over alot. The next step was an MRI so i was shocked when she said she didnt think we should have it as she thinks he is Autistic she said said there is defintely somehting more than a development delay .When we had our mda last year i mentioned my nephew is autistic and she said no way your son is not autistic and i replied i wasnt saying he was but you asked about family history so i thought i would mention it.Since then i took autism off the table and looked into other things. She seemed pretty sure about it and said she would be talking to speech therapy the educational phycologist ot and portage to make the diagnoses official.I am happy and sad i wanted a diagnosis so i know what im dealing with and so people dont think my son is rude because he doesnt respond or interact with them or lazy because he doesnt walk much or slow because he cannot communicate but im sad because i dont know i am.What suprised me is people keep saying he cant be diagnosed until he is 4. He is 2 years 6 months and i know many people have been diagnosed when they are older but the pead seemed positive. Can he be diagnosed this young im a bit confused and im not sure what the future holds or what to expect
Mum of 2 lovely boys Sometimes i cant tell them apart lol![]() |

hi katala
matt was diagnosed at 2 1/2 it all depends on the child and the person doing the diagnosing. Matt didnt have any trouble walking it was more the lack of speech, no eye contact and flapping and eeeeing all the time must say we had never heard of autism until it came out of doctors mouth and she gave us a leaflet which showed symptoms of autism and matt matched a lot of them. things have changed in last 15 years regarding knowledge so it could be you got a doctor who is actually up to date on diagnosing autism which is good and having an autistic nephew you have a head start in what to expect to a certain degree (all autistic ppl are different though also similar if that makes sense)
There comes a point in your life when you realize:Who matters,Who never did,Who won't anymore...And who always will.. So, don't worry about people from your past, there's a reason why they didn't make it to your future. |
