Announcement

Families who have children and young people with special needs very often deal with similar life styles. We have all had concerns ranging from education, acess to services, respite and other issues directly related to their childrens needs. Parents of disabled children bring families together for friendship, to share information and to support one another.

The forum was created by parents who have children with special needs and is run by parents so we are all in this together. With us you will realise you are not alone

Parents of disabled children launched in October 2009 and we are growing day by day and are fastly becoming a major support resource for all

siblings and special needs

hello, been reading a lot of the posts in the introduction section and it seems that there's a lot of families who how have more than one child with additional needs. i have 2 children, Caleb who we knew was special needs after birth (he was diagnosed with a genetic condition at 4.5months called PWS) but now going through the process with my daughter. so far they have confirmed that she has social communication problems and is highly visual. in september they are going make the decission as to weather they are going test for autism.
anyway my question is how common is for families to have more than one child with additional needs?

Hi

I suppose it depends on the nature of the disabilty or condition. My sons condition is genetic so there is a 1 in 2 chance (these odds are specifc to his condition) that any other children my husband and I decide to have will also have Friedriech's, unfortunatley the odds aren't with us and therefore we are unlikey to have anymore children.

All the best and I hope everything goes ok with your daughter.

hmmm i know what you mean, there does seem to be a pattern that people do tend to have more than one child. like munchkin said, i suppose it does depend in the disability.....we too have a child with a genetic condition and have a 1 in 4 chance of any of our other children having cystinosis too. I know there is no genetic link to autism but that does tend to run in our family too (well...mainly on dans side...) its difficult to know really. it does worry you though....

yeah that's one of the things i noticed when reading some of the posts that some of the SN within sidlings differ. even through caleb's syndrome is genetic it's not heredity (think that's how you spell it), [as i was told by the genetist it was a freak of nature, happened at conception and he should of miscarried for two seperate reason] and here we are going down the path of looking for a diagnoses for chloe for something which is completely different to what caleb has. i maybe worded my question wrongly but just wondered if it was alot more common for families to have children with SN that are not directly linked.

hi, i know just what you mean and i too fit the critera lol.... well my 1st child now 7 as a severe speech disorder, my second child now 5 as a severe speech and language disorder (phonological disorder/dyspraxia) with autistic traits and my third child who is 3 as autism. they are all completely different, none have the same disorder/ problems but all 3 are special needs!
