Announcement

Families who have children and young people with special needs very often deal with similar life styles. We have all had concerns ranging from education, acess to services, respite and other issues directly related to their childrens needs. Parents of disabled children bring families together for friendship, to share information and to support one another.

The forum was created by parents who have children with special needs and is run by parents so we are all in this together. With us you will realise you are not alone

Parents of disabled children launched in October 2009 and we are growing day by day and are fastly becoming a major support resource for all

School Sports Day
cheapsensorytoys
they are some good ideas, the concept of sports day for young Children is to have fun with sports, we used to do an obstacle course where we had to climb through a ladder and i hated being in that one as was always scared of getting stuck hehe but liked the running and stuff but everyone is different and they should have enough different games that every child wins a badge

There comes a point in your life when you realize:Who matters,Who never did,Who won't anymore...And who always will..
So, don't worry about people from your past, there's a reason why they didn't make it to your future.

I'm sure there are lots of games that could be included in Sports Day that does not involve running , like Boccie, Rings even Bowls.

Christopher is in a Special Needs school so They do have a lot of games that don't involve running

I happen to agree the school should have other games without the running.
I think the head start to the race is a very counter productive and wrong and highlights your childs condition rather than trying to include her and help her compete in a fun way which she enjoys.

I'm surprised a school sports day still consists of just running races tbh, my daughters school has all the Children put into groups of different ages, then they move round a variety of events, such as the beanbag throwing, jumping, obstacle races etc. People recieve points depending on where they finish (1st place 3 points, 2nd place 2 points etc) which are then added up and its a group winner effort.
This kind of thing started to come in when I was in junior school, and I found it loads better, being amongst the slower runners!
Its pretty poor of the school not to think of what they are doing to your daughter!
I agree with others, speak to them and if they are unhelpful, take her out on the day. Take her to a park with a ball, bucket, beanbag and other things and have your own sports day - how good will she feel if she can beat mum at something! Big Grin

Thank you for your support and suggestions. I will go and talk to the school and put some suggestions to them. I don't think they realise what an ordeal this is for Pam and for other children who are not fast runners. I love the idea of taking Pam out for the day if there is no compromise, and I know she would love it too. She has already asked to be poorly that day! Trouble is, they are not only going to be running on the day itself, they practise the races over the next few weeks. I will make an urgent appointment with the school and hopefully they will be helpful.

This was my first post to the forum and I am so grateful for it, I don't know any other parents with children who have disabilities so this website is a God send. Thanks again x
