cheapsensorytoys
my daughter is soon going to be 6 and she has a undiagnosed learning disability
she at mainstreem school and is hardly making any progress they even had to keep her back a year
in last meeting they advised to have a look at a special needs school and senco is going to take me there

but she will be supported for this year and dont know for the next year what going to be happening

she only made very little progress in a year and 1month
but i want to keep her in mainstream with her brother
but must not let my feelings get involved and think practically whats best for her
soo dont know what to do

Hi Sweetgiz,

It's best to go have a look at the SN schools. After seeing the method of teaching and meeting the teachers there, you will get a better idea if your daughter will benefit from that school. I too felt that my son should go to mainstream , but after seeing the techniques used in the Sn school that I visited , I am convinced that the school will help my son progress.

All the best Smile

it sounds like a really tough decision. I guess my first question is - why are they thinking she would be better in a special needs school? do they feel that she would 'come on' better there or that it would be more acceptable for her not to develop there? is she statemented in her present school and is everything being done that could be to include her in teaching? is she included by the other children socially?
I guess if you are keen for her to stay in the school she's in (cos her brother is there etc.) a learning difficulty shouldn't per se be a reason for her to not attend there and that with good support she may cope.
Having said that if she really isn't fitting in there and isn't getting an education on any level, maybe it would be better to be in an environment where she fits in and caters to her needs.
I think you'll know better once you've been to the school they are recommending. What i would say is that there is choice over placement and all special needs schools are not the same, so if you aren't sure about the one they show you round then look at alternatives nearby ( even in neighbouring LEAs if you have to).
good luck.

i absolutely love jacob's special need school he gets so much more attention, as mentioned above there are lots of different special needs school, my son goes to one specifically with physical and medical disabilities, he has CP so its great for him. there are 70 pupils and 80 members of staff so care is minimum 1:1, on a good day jacob can be in a class of 2 with a teacher and 3 teaching assistants. they work with each child at their level as their abilities vary so widely. they can choose whether or not to follow the national curriculum or not, jacob is the only one in his age group (6 children) who will be following it, the rest do other things at whatever level they are capable but from what i can tell are still pushed to reach their potential.
there are however some SN schools in my area which are nothing like this and i'd never send Jacob to one, if it was a choice between one of those or mainstream, i'd definitely be going for mainstream!
i'd say have a look around and if its not right then you will know, dont be afraid to phone the schools in and around your area yourself and have a look at them all, if your SENCO really feels that speciail education would benefit your daughter she ought to support an application to whichever school you feel best suits her needs
