Does child have to be in school to get statement?
cheapsensorytoys
Hello I'm a newbie, so a little about me and my situation:

I have an 8 year old boy with Autism who was recently diagnosed with type 1 Diabetes (just to make things more interesting!). He has a major problem with school and since september has either been going in for only an hour or an hour and a half or not going in at all (he was completely absent from November until January).

The school has had the beginnings of a statement ready to be sent off since last May but they are holding on to it. They keep saying he will need another assessment, the only problem is that he appears quite normal at school the problems are before going and after, and obviously now the diabetes testing and injection routine.

At our last meeting the headteacher reiterated that he wouldn't be assessed for a statement unless he actually attends school? Is this right? Does that mean that children that are not attending schools don't get statements of special needs?

Any thoughts or advice would be gratefully received.

Hello and Welcome to the forum.
What are the issues with the school to stop him going in?
Usually a statement would be applied to the school enviroment and i personally dont know of anybody with a statement for home schooling.

In regards to the Autism and the diabetes how do you find two conditions work together.
We have a son who has a rare genetic condition called Cystinosis which cause him a number of issues with his health including the need to have a kidney transplant.
He is also being assessed for Autism and the doctor believes its now just the process of being on the road to a diagnosis of autism.
Euan already can be a handful with all his 11 types of medications which are to be given 3-4 times a day and we worry as he gets older he may not comply.
How is your son complying?

hi ferret88, does your son go to mainstream or special needs school? i havent heard of getting a statement out of school as its an educational statement to show his needs regarding learning so would need to be in school to statement him i would think. there is a parent on here that home schools her son so she might have more information.

There comes a point in your life when you realize:Who matters,Who never did,Who won't anymore...And who always will..
So, don't worry about people from your past, there's a reason why they didn't make it to your future.

hi ferret88, as far as i'm aware you don't need to be 'in' school to have a statement done as i have known people get one before they start but the statement is FOR school and wouldn't be needed for home tutoring. if they school are holding back you can contact the local LEA yourself and request it, the will look at paediatric recomendations aswell when compiling one and do an assessment themselves Smile heres a usefull link to read http://www.parentsofdisabledchildren.co....t-t-8.html

My youngest son Daniel (2) has a statement all he has recieved so far other than his therapst input is weekly portage sessions it all depends really on how delayed they are in daniels case his self care needs are all met by myself cant or wont feed himself daniel works to his own agenda if he dont want to do it he wont cant communicate or point to stuff that he wants or needs people are objects in his way are just that he will then climb or crawl over whats in his path to get to where he wants to be he has no sense of his surroundings or dangers his motor skills are that of a 1 yr old and all the rest is below the age of 1 range he doesnt cope well in busy environments and gets quite stressed and will scream and hurt himself and others in his tempers he is due to start a special school in april, My advice is do what you think is best for your child as daniels doctor once said to me you have to force peoples hand ie docs, schools etc to get what you need but its worth it in the long run good luck x
