Are doctors refusing to make a diagnosis of Autism and Adhd on the basis of cost?
cheapsensorytoys
Following on from another post by another member i realised that my views were not sole thinking and it actually appears many people believe that the cost of diagnosis of Autism and ASD does play a major factor and it is allowing many children to slip through the system.

When our Euan recently was undergoing assesment i said how annoyed i was that the person conducting the assesment was in fact an employee of the local council and i felt she was the obstacle and she was our issue with the process.

Then i remember saying that it felt that she was in fact under instruction to stop diagnosing children unless they really had no other choice to save money.

Today i started looking online and was shocked to actually find proof this culture does actually exsist within the NHS.

An article in the Daily Mail confirms this theory:

unfortunately it doesnt just stop at doctors, even with the diagnosis it still took 6 years of me refusing to sign matts school statement before the word autism was put on it and that was only with the help of a new teacher who wouldnt let up until it was on there. he had severe learning and behavioural difficulties! all because it costs more funding for teaching autistic children than ones with severe learning difficulties. i think if there was a blood test or something difinitive way of testing that they couldnt argue their way out of it would make life so much easier.

You know the most frustrating thing,i dont think they realise how much pressure and strain they are putting on people and families along the way and its all just so tiring both physically and mentally.
Oh i need to relax right now..............
Its been a very intense week!

I think i am really lucky , Bradley was diagnosed when he was only 3!! it followed on from his 2 yr check and i raise alot of concerns and he had speech therapy and physiotherapy ect and then finally an assessment was done where we spend 2 days in a unit it was like a nursery setting and diffrent professionals watches Bradley through a 2 way mirror at the end of the 2 days there was a meeting and i was told he was autisic!

I had no idea what autism was and had never heard of it , I feel after he got the "label autism" alot of the help stopped ie speech therapy and it was like everyone was saying his got autism he doesnt need speech therapy he wont talk anyway!! I felt very let down at this point!!

I do feel i am lucky with school tho , from the day he started school he had a statement as it was sorted out which he was still in nursery, he got 121 for the whole day everyday and always has.

I was told tho that he would barely speak and have no imagination and made to feel like he'd achieve nothing yet now age 8 he speaks pretty well his understand of words is not great but i can have a nice conversation with him , he has the most amazing imagination its adorable lol

I must say i am not sure it says autism on his on statement i believe it says learning difficulties !?!? i never thought anything of this , but he is starting his new school in september and the man from the special education department told me he will be amending brads statement so i am wondering if this is what he ment?

it probably will be why bradleysmum because it helps to have autism on the statement as they have a different way of learning so if its on the statement the school will work that way with him (they do anyway really just more funding at end of day) took me some years to get it on his statement and he was at special school from 3. sounds like its all coming together for him now though, congrats
