Are doctors refusing to make a diagnosis of Autism and Adhd on the basis of cost?

Always have as much detail on the statement.
No matter how big or small it is vital to have a full breakdown of each and every issue in order to meet the childs full needs.
Without the word autism on a statement it could impact somewhere on the amount of funding issued to the child as the educational program being used.
I remember reading somewhere they try to reduce the amount of Autistic statements on the Figures as they dont want it to appear as an epidemic because if it did come across as a very high percentage they would have to throughly investigate why and that if they did that they expose something they dont want us all to know.
Makes you wonder sometimes.....

(02-10-2010 05:48 PM)Bradleysmummy Wrote:  I think i am really lucky , Bradley was diagnosed when he was only 3!! it followed on from his 2 yr check and i raise alot of concerns and he had speech therapy and physiotherapy ect and then finally an assessment was done where we spend 2 days in a unit it was like a nursery setting and diffrent professionals watches Bradley through a 2 way mirror at the end of the 2 days there was a meeting and i was told he was autisic!

I had no idea what autism was and had never heard of it , I feel after he got the "label autism" alot of the help stopped ie speech therapy and it was like everyone was saying his got autism he doesnt need speech therapy he wont talk anyway!! I felt very let down at this point!!

I do feel i am lucky with school tho , from the day he started school he had a statement as it was sorted out which he was still in nursery, he got 121 for the whole day everyday and always has.

I was told tho that he would barely speak and have no imagination and made to feel like he'd achieve nothing yet now age 8 he speaks pretty well his understand of words is not great but i can have a nice conversation with him , he has the most amazing imagination its adorable lol

I must say i am not sure it says autism on his on statement i believe it says learning difficulties !?!? i never thought anything of this , but he is starting his new school in september and the man from the special education department told me he will be amending brads statement so i am wondering if this is what he ment?

im guessing you are under the same LA as my children. my son was diagnoised with autism like yours at the same nursery i remenber the windows, he would lick them he never knew i was on the other side. If you want LA to put autism in your sons statement you are at the ideal time as you should get a new proprosed statement withthe change to part 4 saying the ashley school. at this time dig out your diagnostic letter and send it in to LA asking for it to be put into his statement, and dont budge or they wont bother. did you know there is a Autism support group in the area who give great advice on statementing and how things need to be worded to give the correct support to the children. Let me know if your not sure where they meet im not sure if im aloud to write this information on here.

I agree and think it is all down to the old postcode lottery and money. We have spent the last 3 years begging various people in the NHS to assess Ben. It's only since christmas we are being taken seriously. I asked if it was a monetary issue, and was told in a long winded way it was a "resources" issue. Apparently more children are now being referred for testing and thus stretching all "resources" to the limits and in my area there is up to a 12month waiting list for assessment. (Guess who is at the bottom of the list? Finally)
