Equipment  Son in wheelchair but new baby on the way
cheapsensorytoys
Hi,

I have a 6 year old son in a wheelchair and i'm expecting my second child in March. I'm beginning to get stressed out with the logistics of how i will cope with 2 children bearing in mind that he's too big to fit in a double buggy and wouldn't be supported sufficiently.

To begin with i'm sure i will use a carry system for the baby to free my hands up to push the wheelchair but can anyone suggest an attachment for the wheelchair for once baby gets too big for baby carriers?

Your help is much appreciated

Gail

Hi not sure if this is what you are looking after or if it would be suitable http://www.activateforkids.co.uk/tandem.htm you might be able to get some help from http://www.livingmadeeasy.org.uk/ as they have experience with all sorts of equipment

There comes a point in your life when you realize:Who matters,Who never did,Who won't anymore...And who always will..
So, don't worry about people from your past, there's a reason why they didn't make it to your future.

Your sons OT or wheelchair services should be able to advise on an aprioprate double buggy, but they probably won't fund it. There are a few on the market I think, as well as the one posted by Corinne.
Newlife charity will fund if you can get them to write a letter as to why they won't fund though.

Thanks Maria,

unfortunately my son is too big for a buggy now, he also needs the support that his wheelchair provides him so i'm looking for something that would attach to his wheelchair. I have found a buggy pod but i'm unsure whether this will attach safely so will need to do a bit more research.

As for OT or wheelchair services...i'd be as well going and speaking to the local ice cream shop as they would be more interested and helpful!!!! Asked at our last appointment but was told they didn't get involved as they are only there to support the disabled child!

Agh I can post a link as I'm too new, look at activate for Children website, they do a wheelchair style buggy and you can have postural support etc etc and a baby seat is attached on the back and you can change it for a toddler seat when suitable. Pricey but ther really is NOTHING else on the market. The smorph buggy pod is only suitable for toddlers not babies.

Good luck,
Kala x
