Announcement

Families who have children and young people with special needs very often deal with similar life styles. We have all had concerns ranging from education, acess to services, respite and other issues directly related to their childrens needs. Parents of disabled children bring families together for friendship, to share information and to support one another.

The forum was created by parents who have children with special needs and is run by parents so we are all in this together. With us you will realise you are not alone

Parents of disabled children launched in October 2009 and we are growing day by day and are fastly becoming a major support resource for all

hi i live in a three bed house which my hubby and i brought with my 5 children and 2 step daughters my sons who are 11 and 8 both have learning differculties the younger being more severe my other three children are girls aged 4/4/3 they are currently sharing a room with their 9 year old half sister my 11 year old has his own room and my eldest stepdaughter who is 15 has her own room. my hubby and i are in what should be the living room and my 8 year old is in part of the dining/sitting room when we brought the property we thought we could extend onto it but now reviewing our funds have found we are short of cash dom (the 8 year old) cannot have a bedroom away from us as he has no sense of danger and messes with the fire cooker hot water plugs etc so we need to build 2 bedrooms upstairs to keep us near him and his brother and younger sisters is there anyway we could get any help towards the cost of doing this? if there isn't we will still be trying to get this done but it will take longer to do and dom will be more at risk as time goes by and we slowly get on with the work needed. thanks for taking the time to read

hi Laura
i am not the expert on housing but have you had an assessment for a DFG grant? i dont think you will get help with that due to from what you are saying you are classed as being overcrowded and the council would look at moving you rather than helping with a grant to build on but all councils are different so it would be worth seeing where you are at with your council. you would need an OT or social worker to refer you to the council.

i think that they still help, there has been a couple of members on here who had to move due to their house being unsuitable for extensions and in todays market houses arent selling so i think you can rent your house out while living in a council house to cover the mortgage payments. i will see if i can find the thread
