can i refuse a diagnosis
cheapsensorytoys
hi all im quite new here so stick with me :-)

ok my question is can you refuse a diagnosis ?
my little girl is 7 and lives with autism , she is in a mainstream school and has 121 allday ,
however they are pushing for more school think she has ADHD and have refered her back to the paeds we have done the connors questionaire and the paeds agree ,however i dont ,she does have a problem with her attention span but not hyperactive ,granted this is not really my area of expertise but i am a nurse and care for children with ADHD a lot and i dont feel she fits it that box so to speak ,so can i refuse to have it put in her notes ?

also school wants her to have a statement and im not sure if i want that ,what are your thoughts ?

sorry for all the questions but its all quite new to me ,i buried my head in the sand for a long time before admitting there was a problem ,i just didnt want to face the fact that i had 2 children with extra needs
thanks in advance

Hi, I don't know if you can refuse a diagnosis but sounds like you know better than the doctors who are just reading from a file if your daughter is or not so you might be better requesting an appointment with doc and asking him to explain why he thinks she has ADHD and you can put your thoughts across.
Regarding the statement the school need this to get the funding for 1:1 don't they? It won't change how they treat your daughter but will help them to get any extra help she might need like speech therapy or other things she might need to help her keep up with her studies.

There comes a point in your life when you realize:Who matters,Who never did,Who won't anymore...And who always will..
So, don't worry about people from your past, there's a reason why they didn't make it to your future.

I would agree with what Corinne has said, but I would add that, if your not happy with the diagnosis then you have the right to a second opinion, so you could request that. Talk it over with someone completely independent and get them to express their thoughts.
