Hi Sally
I would be happy to help you with your research as I have very strong views about this area. I had a very traumatic birth which resulted in my son being deprived of oxygen and therefore severley disabled. I have been offered no counselling and I strongly feel that in the beginning we parents need this extra support and help. Fear is a big emotion you feel along with a whole host of others and just having someone else to speak to would have been a big help. I would be happy to answer any mores specific questions you have via P.M Cheers Linzi x |

Hi Linzi,
You raise a very valid point about the intial diagnosis. Our doctor wrote the name of Euans condition on a piece of paper and told us to go to see another specialist the day after and never really explained the condition. So we got into the hospital car park and used google on the blackberry and were just in a state of shock and i actually was just crying whilst driving i was so dumb founded. And no there was no support of any kind and they just kept piling more information in our heads but nobody for one second asked how we as parents felt. Maybe counselling should be offered to all parents upon diagnosis? ![]() Our Irish members can also use our new website for Ireland which is |

Hi Sally,
I have a daughter aged 5 who has special educational needs and is being assessed for autism. In my opinion, counselling should be available to all parents but especially those whose children have a disability. My little girl is having a horrible time at school which is made worse because she is very immature for her age but I know many other children go through the same experience. I am finding it almost impossible to know how to deal with an emotional 5 year old doesn't understand that you are allowed to have more than one friend and that your "best" friend may want to play with someone else. It is so painful. Good luck with your studies. |

I am currently having councelling with a trainee councellor through an organisation called Wired. They offer councelling for carers of disabled children and I found out about it through a local support group. I have found it invaluable and don't think I would be coping without it. I do feel that parents should be offered much more support as it is really left to us to go to our GP etc.
