Im unsure.
I was unsure if we would actualy be entitled to it as our son can actualy walk. But i was told i should apply as i stand a very good chance in getting it as our son has Severe learning difficulties, Servere behavioural problems, Severe global development delays aswel as having Flat feet & Heart problems. Sam can walk.. but does need alot and i mean alot of encouragement to walk when out and sometimes crys to be carried which isnt always possible. (We are unsure if hes in pain or if he gets out of breath causing him wanting to be picked up as hes oblivious to the on goings around him and finds it hard to express hes feelings as hes communication isnt great. Sam doesnt know how to ride a bike just yet, and finds it hard to climb the stairs (tends to crawl), and he cant run properly or even jump. (We are unsure if this is related to hes flat feet or not) Also sam is a danger t hes self as wel as others whilst out, as i previously stated he trys to gander off. Hes tried to walk into roads infornt of cars before now aswel as infront of moving swings (and when you shout him its asthough he is deaf or possibly cant hear due to the glue ear im unsure). He is also very vulnerable, as what little comunication he does have he will try to talk to strangers etc and would possibly leave with anyone.. Also.. bare in mind.. we live on the same road as the school and it takes me 5minutes to walk to school on my own and 15-20mins to walk back when i have sam. & even some days we have to drag the car out of the drive as hes flat out refuses to walk to school and hes behaviour gets the better of him as he tantrums like there no tommorow. hope i answered ur Q dan.. just went on a big babble. Sorry! (This post was last modified: 03-08-2010 11:49 PM by Lea89x.) |

Hi - Not sure why they can reject the mobility component. The rules state that if awarded middle or high rate care component, you automatically qualify for the mobility. Very odd! I can see where they are coming from -you would watch any 5 year old as they might all run in front of a car, completely oblivious, but on the other hand, your child has a certain disability -which they have accepted already by paying you dla. One can argue that the majority of us with disable children don't require motability because all parents are responsible for getting their children around. However, for those who are disabled it's different and for you, those problems will become more apparent as the next few years go by -the gap between your child at 7 and a non-disabled 7 year old outdoors will be more evident. By denying you now, they are only putting off for a short time. Personally I don't think they can do this. It might be that it's the way you worded the application form with the section on 'Help with getting around'. I know of people with severely disabled children who were turned down for the care element of dla, because of how they did the form. Once you get the official decision in writing, you'll have the chance to appeal. I suggest you ring someone for help with this -either the CAB or the disability rights commission -if they can't help they'll point you in the right direction. Don't get stressed out - keep it in proportion- you will get there - and remember, they'll have to back date the payments to when you applied. Best of luck.

hi fellwalker
welcome to the forum!! just to note....just because someone gets middle or high rate care it doesnt mean you automatically qualify for mobility...thats seperate. The rules state that you can only get mobility if you get middle or high rate care but its not automatic. silly really as common sence would say that if you need high rate care...you probably will need some form of mobility help but you know they do like to make us work for it ![]() xx |
