Announcement

Families who have children and young people with special needs very often deal with similar life styles. We have all had concerns ranging from education, acess to services, respite and other issues directly related to their childrens needs. Parents of disabled children bring families together for friendship, to share information and to support one another.

The forum was created by parents who have children with special needs and is run by parents so we are all in this together. With us you will realise you are not alone

Parents of disabled children launched in October 2009 and we are growing day by day and are fastly becoming a major support resource for all

DLA Update (need advice)
cheapsensorytoys
Hi Guys,

I am not sure if you remember me, but we were claiming middle rate care DLA for Charlie, I have just found out today that we have been awarded High rate Mobility from June which is fantastic and will help up out alot with things that he needs etc.

Can I ask and I know it is cheeky, does anyone know if you are entitled to claim anything else or get any other help if you get these?

We also have a blue badge for him which helps with getting about.

We dont rent or anything so would not need housing benefits etc but I have heard about help with car tax etc.

Thanks in advance

Sharon

Hello sharon19750

You can get a motability car either standard production vehicle with adaptations provided by motability or a wav wheelchair accessible car where the child stays in his wheelchair. You can get your child assessed to see what suits them best and you. You can get a grant for special needs car seats either through your ot or certain grants through newlife check website out. If you dont get a specialist car which you can change every 3 years check website out, you can get your tax on your own car free. Train pass free apply to your local transport. My son gets the train pass which includes trains, busses, and ferries. Also we go through the merseytunnel a lot so we applied for a FAST TAG pass lets you go through the tunnel free you get enough passes for 12 months. Have you had adaptations to your house, if so you are entitled to reduced council tax and council benefit pending on income. Also we got a grant from newlife for a shed (£500) for all our sons disability equipment to store and a special needs car seat we havent paid for a car seat for our son at all. Apply to family fund for clothes equipment etc and holidays uk or abroad. Also we got a specialist mattress from my sons ot as he couldnt settle at night just like the hospital ones, anything you need please ask your ot if it sounds silly please ask them if you need this for your child. IF you need anything else i have folders full of info. How old is your son? speak soon. xxx

Hi

Yes, you can get your car tax paid for, a parking bay outside your home. If you get working tax credits and child tax credits, and you have a severely disabled child you get more.
