dla appeal for 8yr old adhd son

Hi I am going to a dla appeal tribunal on 9th nov 2010 and am really nervous I am going to mess it up! I have adhd, dyslexia and dispraxia myself and get tongue tied very easy when I try to describe the problems my son faces on a day to day basis! I have a rep from welfare rights coming with me to the hearing but I know they going to ask me questions directly about my son! Just wondering if anyone has any tips for me on how to cope? When we applied for dla we got turned down on their opinion that, despite camhs and schools supporting info and the minor fact that my son is on medication for adhd, he does not have behaviour or concentration issues and that he can complete pe at school so he does not qualify for dla!!! As someone who has ahhd myself I was fuming and vowed to take it as far as I can as I did not get diagnosed until i was 1 month from turning 18yr old and I never got any help and I am damned if that is going to happen to my son lol! Sorry for the rant but this is the 1st place I have found where I can hopefully get some advice from parents going through similar things! |

Only just saw this
do you have a welfare officer or anyone such as a social worker who would be able to go through the process with you and support you on the day? How supportive where the school reports etc? Did you see them before they were sent?Xx |

hi he needs constant supervision and encouragement to do any tasks even down to on a bad day he can take upto an hour to put on a pair of socks which means most mornings i end up dressing him so he gets to school/appointments on time! he soils himself regular and we often get called into school to clean him up and have to check him regular during the night! he can not concentrate longer than 5 mins on anything and he has a statement of sen at school as he is only learning at p-levels! he has no danger sense and doesnt realise that running onto the road is not a good thing to do! he also just runs off when you are out shopping as he does not think its dangerous to do that! he does not settle in bed he goes up at 8pm but does not settle until approx 11.30pm he just runs around, climbs in the bedroom window etc and most nights i have to go up and sit on the end of his bed till he goes to sleep which means sometimes i can be there anywhere from 30 mins to 3 hours! he needs to be encouraged to keep eating his meals or he will have a mouthful and then start to get up and run around to play or just sit and stare into space! that is just a brief outline of what he is like but it varies day to day and this is what he is like even though he has his medication!
yeah i have a welfare rights person going with me but i will not meet with them until 15 mins before the hearing in the building it is being held at! |
