Parents of disabled children bring families together for friendship, to share information and to support one another.

The forum was created by parents who have children with special needs and is run by parents so we are all in this together. With us you will realise you are not alone

Parents of disabled children launched in October 2009 and we are growing day by day and are fastly becoming a major support resource for all

hiya, just after some advice really. our son alfie is 3 and has a range of disabilities and wondering what benefits or help we may be entitled to? we've applied for DLA and the council inspector came out yesterday and there going to reduce our council tax because the amount of equipment alfie has takes an entire room. we live in a privately owned house and we both work but were going to have to install 3 external ramps and 1 internal ramp soon and that's not going be cheap! any help we can get would be much needed. thanks x

were all angels in waiting!!

Do you have an occupational therapist as they can often help you get funding for things. We've had ours round and a woman from social services to do an adaptations report which would hopefully be funded by the council (even though we own the property) but things are on a real go slow with that.

Sorry not much more help but I'm sure there are loads of people on here who will know more

hi, we too have had the ot from social services disability team round to do an assessment. we have had a large ramp to the front of the property, a stairlift and a roll in shower chair provided at no cost. we are also in lancashire where in lancs are you?

I never thought it would happen to me.

Firstly, do not yet pay for anything yourself because once you've done that you cannot be refunded any monies.
Ok so for ramps and adaptations you first point of contact is you OT who will refer you to the major adaptations people who came and assess you for a Disabilities Facilities Grant or DFG. You child is under 16 so your entitled without them looking at your finances. Up to £30,000 worth but there are restrcitions, they will help you know what they will and will not do for you. If one of those ramps is to the garden they won't do it, they will only do one access, the official line is - access to the GP. But there is a charity who will help, I think its the ACT foundation who will help with adaptations.
Unfortunatly DFG adaptations do vary a little area to area, but the amount and the entitlement is the same, its just what their rules that vary a little, I've noticed this from talking to people online.
As for benefits, I can tell you what I get, others may get different as it changes with the needs of your child.
I get Middle rate care DLA and high rate mobility. Carers allowance, (you must get middle rate care allowance to qualify for this) And My tax credits went up considerably also when they found out my son was awarded DLA.
Hope this helps.
