Behaviour at Appts
cheapsensorytoys
Hi Everyone

Whenever we take Joe (14) to any hospital appt, he has a massive paddy; making it almost impossible to examine him.

I know he feels scared at appts because he worries what else is going to happen (operations etc)

Anyone else have this problem?

We've been referred for therapy to help him but I don;t have an awful lot of hope wih this.

Hi Libby,

I have been having the very same problem with my 6 year old son, I have now got the learning disablity team involved (hes very sensory) they are going to do an hospital assessment on him, taking him to nice places within the hospital then he doesn't feel fretened, the team are also making a list of do's and don'ts for the hospital staff to make life easier for all concerned, check with the hopsital and health care professionals to see if there is anything in your area.

Hope it helps Confused

I have the same problem but with my husband having a massive paddy Blush I can't blame him though the waiting times get longer and longer.

No wonder Children don't want to co-oporate - they (Dr's) keep you waiting for hours in a noisy / busy waiting room with rubbish battery-less toys and then expect our children to sit nicely while they try and dicuss how they've been.

Our son is very noise / photo sensitive - Pendlebury CH has now moved into Manchester; the OPD in Manchester Childrens is awful - it a big echo and chamber very bright, not very conductive to keping children calm.

We tend to take his favourite books / toys with us to any appointments; also we have downloaded his fav movie onto my iPad so he will sit there and watch it

Good Friends are like stars;

You don't often see them ...
... but you know they're always there

lol, I am going to have to invest in an iPad, my sons fav' past time is playing pool and bowling so its a no no for me, they are going to start the assessmant in the next few weeks so I am feeling hopeful at the moment, but they won't be able to change his sensory problems so watch this space, xBlush

Hi

Thanks for the replies!

Joe has an ipod and has got used to the hanging around, just can't cope with people talking about him and his problems.; he just freaks. And when you've waited hours to see a doc and they are unable to examine him, it's somewhat annoyingAngry

As I said before, he's been referred for family therapy but we will have to discuss him with him in the room as it's "family therapy"! Doesn't sound very hopeful does it?
